PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Well summer is finally arriving and so has another important milestone in Calgary. Finally like most other large cities in Canada we have a city wide recycling program. Sunalta has been receiving pickup since April 21 and for the small monthly fee we receive a convenient way to recycle and reduce our impact on the environment. It’s so nice to see the full blue bins next to our much smaller piles of trash. I hope someday the city will launch a similar program for the condo and apartment residents, but in the mean time I encourage everyone to continue recycling via the blue bins or the recycling centre at the Calgary Tennis Club. And don’t forget the other more important parts of the 3R’s: REDUCE and REUSE!!!
Until next time
Kevin Ritchot
President, Sunalta Community Association

SUNALTA SCHOOL NEWS
Once again, Sunalta School’s students had a fabulous year. New initiatives include the installation of built-in Smartboards, the teacher one-to-one laptop project, YouthInkIT journalism program and twelve new Lego NXT Mindstorm kits. Also, we had a live band, Sweet Potato, at our family dance in May. Thanks to parents Nick T, Wayne I and David G for their fine contribution.
Finally, the wall construction is over and Dean Stanton is creating a new mural design after a visioning process with students. This parent run initiative includes replacement of the entire mural. If you or your company would like to donate to this expensive and historic project, please contact the school @ 403-777-8590.
The 2009 – 2010 school year will start off with a World Skills Competition visit to Sunalta on September 1. The team from the United Arab Emirates will be coming by for a short presentation. Our school population is still healthy with a waitlist for each grade.
Thanks to everyone for their kind support of Sunalta School. Have an exciting and safe holiday!

Sacred Heart School News
“Personal, Positive, Prayerful”
Learning is exciting and fun at Sacred Heart School. At our Annual Young Author Event, students became distinguished authors as they shared their “published” stories in multi-age groups. They also enjoyed their recent field trip to Aggie Days where they milked cows, watched sheep being sheared and held fluffy baby chicks. Our School Council organized a Spring Family Dance where students, parents and staff kicked up their dancing heels to the music of a great DJ. We also enjoyed the beautiful music of the Cantare Children’s Choir who came to perform at our school. We are making good use of our new Smartboards as the grade five students presented their Religion projects to their classmates using the latest Notebook Software.
We are always accepting registrations for students for all grades from K-6. At this time of year, parents are often looking to register their children for Kindergarten. For the 2009-2010 school year, students must be 5 years of age before March 1, 2010. If you are anyone you know would like to register their children at Sacred Heart School now or for September 2009, please have them contact the school at 244-5207 or visit us at 1312 – 15 Street SW.
exists today. I contacted William Shaw and his son Dave and jogged Willaim’s memory about the house at 1705 10th Ave SW. William remembered moving the house from the Mission area – from 4th St between 23rd and 24th Ave - and Dave found out that he had lived in Sunalta for a few years as a young boy.
The Mission area is one of Calgary’s oldest communities, beginning in the 1880s. A middle and working-class community like Sunalta, Mission’s streets are lined with primarily wooden one and two-story houses, dating to the early 1900s. Also, like Sunalta, the 1950s and 60s brought small, boxy apartments to Mission, to cater to those wanting an affordable inner-city lifestyle. With apartments moving in, and with 4th St and 17th Ave becoming increasingly retail areas, many of Mission’s original houses were displaced. Thanks to William Shaw, one of them went on to quietly live the second half of its life in Sunalta.
SUNALTA HISTORY – Riki Winkler
While many houses in Sunalta have lived to see almost a century of our neighbourhood’s history, it turns out some had a story before they became part of our community.
I received a request to research the history of the house at 1705 10th Ave SW. Currently the home to a law firm, the owners were interested in finding out what had gone on within the walls of their offices. This house appeared to be the vintage of an original Sunalta house, but I could not find any record of it until the mid-1950’s, at which time it was owned by William B. Shaw. Mr. Shaw’s occupation was listed as an employee with York Shaw & Sons. Checking the local Yellow Pages of the day, I discovered York Shaw & Sons was a building moving company that still exists today.

NeighbourWoods in Sunalta

Thank you to everyone who called 311 to request trees for their property. Now that the order taking has stopped, the city of Calgary gardeners are assessing the locations with respect to utility placement and room for tree growth. Everyone who has requested a tree will probably be contacted by the time that you read this. The city gardeners are the people who make the final assessment regarding viability of planting site so I’m crossing my fingers for all of you!
In the mean time, we have our big planting date – Saturday June 20th! We are going to need volunteers to help with this day – there are folks who have requested assistance with getting the tree to their property (we will have wheelbarrows – please let me know if you can lend yours) and with the planting of their trees (the holes will already by dug by the city). We are currently planning on having the trees delivered to Royal Sunalta Park and there will be demonstrations on how to plant, so there are no special skills required. If you happen to have a shovel and/or gardening gloves, please bring them along, but we will also have spares to lend out. We will start at 10am.
Please contact me if you can help out on June 20th or if you require assistance or if you called in and haven't yet been contacted or if you have other questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Ann Marie Barnhill

Sunalta Wildflower Garden Update
Well, here’s hoping that spring has finally sprung, so that means that we need to do some cleanup at the Sunalta Wildflower Garden. Although we haven’t quite nailed down a date, we’re thinking sometime around the May long weekend. We are also planning on adding a new load of mulch sometime soon. Please watch for the blue sign at the garden for dates/times or contact me if you would like me to contact you in advance.

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Riva’s Eco Store – rivasecostore.com
1534 17th Ave SW (403)452-1001
Did you know that Sunalta is home to the city’s only one-stop shop for hard-to-source eco-friendly items? Owner Riva Mackie, was awakened to her environmental conscience while working to cure health problems while in university. Later, while pregnant, Riva and her husband Andrew sought natural products for their home and baby and found they were difficult to find. After suffering a tragic miscarriage at 29 weeks, the young entrepreneurs poured their energy into their business idea and Riva’s Eco Store was born.
Since early 2008, Riva’s Eco Store has been offering non-toxic products for customers looking to make a change in their lives, their bodies and the world: high-quality organic and sustainable fibre clothing, non-toxic baby items, toys, green building items (paint, flooring and countertops, etc), mattresses and bedding, skin-care products, gardening supplies and cleaning products.
A new product getting lots of attention is an electric indoor composter. Compact and odourless, this apartment-friendly unit can compost 120lbs per month – including meat, fish, eggs, the works. While it can be added to anytime, you will produce one batch of concentrated compost fertilizer ready for use, every two weeks (one batch is suitable for roughly 4 square metres of lawn). Use in house plants, gardens, for trees or shrubs, or give to a neighbour or friend who can use it. To check it out, head over to Riva’s. The store is a great destination for a weekend afternoon stroll – inviting, friendly and educational. Check out Riva’s and support this local business that we are so lucky to have.

SUNALTA COOKING CORNER – Barbeque Sauce
With Stampede just around the corner and summer grilling at its finest, why not try and create your own signature barbeque sauce. With a few simple ingredients and a bit of creativity, you could be on your way to BBQ notoriety! Try on chicken, beef or even tofu.
Mix all of the following ingredients together in a sauce pan and simmer for twenty minutes. Measurements are approximate, so use your own judgement.
1 can tomato sauce
1 TBSP cider vinegar
2 TBSP dark brown sugar or molasses
1 TBSP garlic powder
1 TBSP onion powder
1 TBSP mustard or a bit of powdered mustard
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
Add minced chipotle peppers, ancho chilli powder, cayenne pepper, bourbon, liquid smoke, honey, maple syrup, roasted garlic, or herbs like sage or rosemary - experiment until you come up with your own secret recipe.
SUNALTA KIDS
Summer is the perfect time to pull out the good old fashioned skipping rope – it’s good exercise for the whole family.
Here’s a rhyme to try out:
Mabel, Mabel (or child’s name) set the table,
Just as fast as you are able.
Don't forget the salt, sugar, vinegar, mustard,
red-hot pepper (start to turn the rope faster here)!
Another summer activity for all ages is bubble blowing. Did you know that magical bubble soap is easy to make?
Mix together:
½ cup dish detergent
5 cups water
2 TBSP glycerine (available from the drug store – makes bubbles stronger)
PUZZLE TIME
Can you find 12 animals in this rather curious poem?
A person, as simple we are.
Catch the kid o’er the bridge.
Follow the chief, oxtail soup we like.
Anagram ANPI gives us PAIN, cower under a ridge.
