This August we are celebrating a substantial milestone for the SCA – On August 13th 1954 The Sunalta Community Association was officially incorporated! HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY TO US.

What does that mean? As an incorporated Non-profit we opened ourselves up to more rules and regulations but also increased our eligibility for grants and funding (much needed grants and funding!)

Through these past 70 years, we’ve been able to grow a presence in our community that has allowed us to meet more needs of our residents and greater community members, and we have big plans to keep growing and building our capacity to invest and work for the Sunalta community.

Some fun historical facts about Sunalta:

  • The community of Sunalta was developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway (“CRP”) on a Dominion land grant. The original 25-foot lots were sold from 1909 to 1911. The lots originally sold for $250 each.

  • “Sunalta” was chosen as the community's name – apparently originating from an elementary school contest – and it is a contraction of “Sunny Alberta”.

The community association and the hall have been many things to many people over the years and with the current ongoing construction of our hub building. We are building a legacy for years to come.
