TERRITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We are located on traditional territories of the Blackfoot and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyethka Nakoda First Nations, including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nation. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. Respectfully, we acknowledge that we share the land as people of Treaty 7.

ABOUT

Formerly a traditional Community Association, the new Sunalta is a resident-led initiative that removes social isolation, improves food security and creates a community living room, where all Calgarians are welcome to come together to find support, experience culture, share in conversation and enjoy being neighbourly.

Over the years we have been instrumental in driving social change and building a stronger, more vibrant community by offering diverse and responsive programs and services. We consider ourselves a vehicle for social change, with a focus on innovation, inclusion, sustainability and advocacy.

We are creating a self-sustaining social enterprise that includes the construction of a modern and flexible facility that will house a commercial kitchen, coffee kiosk, multi-use rooms for programming and a newly renovated heritage hall. Site improvements will include a new playground, expanded community gardens and hardscaping, that will serve as a basketball court as well as an overflow parking lot.

The social enterprise we imagine will maximize both profits and social impact. Funds generated from the rental of the commercial kitchen and the coffee kiosk will go directly back into the community to supplement programs. This public building will allow programming to be delivered to the diverse populations of Sunalta, resulting in a stronger, more connected community. This project will lead the way in a new era of sustainable Community Centres, generating an economic impact of ~$47million for the local economy, creating jobs and providing a number of social benefits which will contribute to a stronger, more vibrant inner-city. This innovative model will be an example for other community associations in the city to follow. After years of engagement studies we are well on our way to bringing
Imagine Sunalta to life. You can read all about this exciting project here.
