Silvia Ross has been a City of Calgary Community Social Worker in Sunalta since 2009. Silvia has been supporting residents, business owners and community stakeholders through an intentional community development approach to help community members come together and achieve common goals that build a strong and connected neighbourhood. Silvia works in partnership with the Sunalta Community Association to look for opportunities to activate and create a welcoming and inclusive gathering space at the community hall. The goal is for this community hub to be an incubating space for community connections, capacity building opportunities and a place where residents can access services and supports right in the community. Working alongside residents and other partners, Silvia identifies barriers and opportunities for residents to participate in community life. This work contributes to the Community Hub Initiative, a citywide initiative led by The City of Calgary, Rotary Clubs of Calgary, and United Way of Calgary and Area, with the goal of strengthening neighbourhoods by prototyping and activating seven community hubs in the priority locations between 2017 and 2021. Each neighbourhood is unique with distinct characteristics, needs, and assets. However, all sites have four common key features: Hubs are welcoming and inclusive gathering spaces Residents engage in the planning, design, and implementation Hubs provide access to supports, services, and resources Hubs are platforms to spark community economic development activities Silvia C.
